Meandering around Mawson Lakes .....

 ~psephotus haematonotus  ~

I spotted this colourful little red-rumped parrot munching out on seeds and grasses
while on a photo shoot in and around the Mawson Lakes area.

The male is easily identified by his bright red-rump feathers

although they are quite common in my area
I have never lost the wonder of finding a cluster of these
little gems feeding under shrubbery
or seeing their little heads bobbing up and down
whilst feeding amongst green grassy pastures

because of their sedentary lifestyle
and the fact that they feed low to the ground
many of these birds fall victim to domestic cats

Beautiful birds and great photos. It would be wonderful to see even one of them but they don't live up this way unfortunately!

What delightful birds. I love the red rump. But too bad they spend so much time on the ground, with cats around.
