Pelicanus  Conspicillatus  ~

“A wonderful bird is the Pelican.
His beak can hold more than his belly can.
He can hold in his beak
Enough food for a week!
But I'll be darned if I know how the hellican?”
Dixon Lanier Merritt

I think I would have to disagree with the last line of the rhyme by Dixon Merritt
this pelican snapped along the upper reaches of the Torrens River
certainly looked like his beak would hold more than his belly can.

Great picture! I see brown pelicans all the time, but I haven't seen a translucent beak like this.

Wonderful capture, Dianne! We have white pelicans here in Minnesota (USA) that look similar to these, but not nearly as much black. Love seeing different bird species!

One of those moments one seldom catches on camera. Congrats.

What has always amazed me, Dianne, is that these guys down there (and their friends up here in Moreton Bay and eslewhere) will suddenly up and head for Lake Eyre whenever it starts filling – without needing to check the weather report. It's one of the great mysteries that I'll regret not understanding on my death bed.

,,,along with not noticing the wrong spelling 'elsewhere' in the above.

Yawning? Great photo. I saw two fighting for a fish once. They both had the fish in the beaks and neither was letting go.

Fantastic photo capture with the sun/light shining through the beak like that. Love that rhyme - never knew where it came from before. My Gran told it to me when I first came back to Australia from NZ.

They are amazing birds Dianne. The one with his beak open looks like he could gobble up that rower.

I love watching the pelicans, especially when I got to watch them on the Torrens River! The first time I visited this river I also saw for the first time a black swan, they are also beautiful to watch! You live in an amazingly beautiful city Dianne, one I'd love to return to!

Have a g'day!
