Thistle Do ........

Scotch or Cotton Thistles are considered a weed in our corner of the world
but I love the splash of colour they bring to our Summer landscape.

Even the dead and dying seedheads have a beauty all of their own
sort of rustic with faded lavender woolly heads perched
upon long cobwebby stems

These are so very lovely and well-captured! Almost a shame they have to be a nightmare to someone:)

I leave thistles on parts of our property for the finches. Love the flowers, too.

I like them as well. Hope you are coping okay with the heat down there. We are due for it tomorrow, hopefully for one day only.

Hi Dianne,

Lovely photographs of the Scotch thistles and pretty to look at, not to touch.
Hope that you are managing to stay cool in the heat over there.

Best wishes for 2013
hugs

Some of the weeds we come across can be very beautiful, and like you say, a photographer's paradise!

Don't forget the artichoke which is a mighty tasty thistle. Our summer is six months away, and it's good to see these plants. Thanks.

What beautiful photographs. Others also admire these flowers as I have seen more and more of them used in decorative flower displays.

They are so beautiful, it's a shame they are such a pest. Love the first shot and the words you use to describe them.

Yes they are lovely. I have spotted a few out at Whistlers Rest but decided I should kill them off before I had more than I wished to deal with. so no photographs.

I remember being part of a volunteer conservation group who went out along roadsides and in the hills, digging out these thistles and other "weeds". It was summer, but we had to wear boots and long pants and long sleeved shirts along with heavy gloves to protect ourselves from prickles, bigger thorns and snakes. I cut down and dug out so many of these pretty thistles in the few weeks I stayed with the group.
