The Lake By Night.........

~  Mawson Lakes Boulevard  ~

This boulevard is a short stretch along the north end of the main lake
with restaurants running from end to end
Tonight the diners have all had their fill and gone home
which is an excellent opportunity for me to
practise night shots across the lake.

Very nice pic Dianne. I find i have to work a bit harder with night shots.

Al .... I'm contemplating the purchase of a tripod .... The problem being I don't know if I would actually go to the trouble of carrying it around .... Most probably not!

Hi Diane, I love the reflection. I own a tripod, didn't bring it along on this trip, but I find that it really helps with shots like this. I also invested in a remote and that I did bring. Even if I prop my camera up somewhere at least I can use the remote and help to stop the camera shake.

Is this taken near Adelaide? It looks lovely!

Most of the time I find that a tripod is really essential for good night shots, but then i forget it and have to make do with balancing the camera on a wall or against a tree or whatever. Have you looked at the small 'gorilla' tripods?

Al .... Will check out the gorilla tripods ... I need something lightweight and easy to carry.

If you have some cash to spare, or someone to cajole into getting you a really nice present, carbon fibre tripods are light and strong. Mine cost about $400 and weighs just over 1kg with the ballhead. Its still a nuisance to carry it around but at least its doable. The other thing you could do is get a cheap 50mm F1.8 lens (about $150) which will let you shoot in low light. You new camera should let you push the ISO up a long way. My Chinese New Year parade shots were held held with 50mm at high ISO (probably up to 3200).

This is a pretty colorful reflection. This is one area I need to learn how to do night shots. Yes, a tripod is must for those steady shots.

Mawson Lakes is so pretty. We have friends who live there so it's always nice going to visit them. I remember taking a walk around that very lake with my flower girl about a year ago! Lovely photo :)
