Christmas Lights In The Suburbs..............

A little blurry but I quite like this family home
all dressed up for Christmas.
My little point and shoot camera just doesn't do it justice
and I have resolved in the New Year to purchase
my first ever SLR camera  - in fact I'm looking forward to it
and have been busy comparing cameras and prices
decisions! decisions!

Looks a bit like an advent calendar. Once you have decided on a camera, will you look overseas to see how cheaply you can buy it via the net?

And then you have the pleasure of choosing lenses .... I love my Canon 50D, but I neeeeeeed more lenses. Merry Christmas!

Some people do very much to lighten up their house. We have all over the top houses here too.

I like the soft look that little bit of blur gives Dianna, these people have decorated very tastefully. Aimee and I take a friend every year and drive around the burbs to check out the lights, some folks go way OTT, but it's kind of nice to look, my Mum used to love looking at the lights, wish she was here to look at them now.

Not an easy decision, this is a lovely photo anyway. Have a good Christmas and I look forward to following you in 2012.

Probably the most important issue for shots like this is whether you use a tripod. I have started using one for night shots and it makes a world of difference. Have fun shopping for your DSLR. You deserve a treat!

Beautifully decorated.
I have a Sony 350, very very good and I love it but my secret wish is a Canon, just too expensive,

Here's wishing you and yours

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

I think the picture looks good - it's pretty sharp actually. I don't know why the bright lights have "smeared" - could there be something on the lens? If you took that handheld: double congratulations! As Jack noted, a tripod makes all the difference. I use a small one with my point and shoot, but it requires me to find a suitable height bin, seat or railing to lean it on. Failing that I'm taking pictures from a very low viewpoint. As an alternative have a look at a GorillaPod. Anyway I've enjoyed your pictures: they're always very clear, bright and well composed. I'm looking forward to seeing what you can do with a DSLR. Merry Christmas!

Well-captured, Diane. I think the blurry effect is a bonus.

I wish for a nice camera too. My present one doesn't even take photos like yours. So I miss out on all the wonderful night opportunities.

I'm taking my new(ish) today out tonight to try and get the Christmas lights. You do so well with your p&s I'm really looking forward to seeing what you can do with an SLR. May I make a suggestion? Do a course and learn to use the manual controls, don't just leave it on Auto.

that should say toy not today.

Ann:- will let you know what I choose - whatever it is I just know I'm going to be out of my depth for a while - thanks for the tip about learning the manual operation - I'll scout around and see what classes are offering. Have fun with your new camera.

Hi Dianne,

Love the coloured lights of the house, so pretty.
How wonderful to be getting a new camera.
I love my Cannon EOS 1000D but really need to go and learn how to use it properly.

Warmest wishes for a merry Christmas and a year filled with happy days.
