And A Cat Named Trim......

Tulka is a  picturesque little bay on the southern end of Eyre Peninsula
where in 1802 Matthew Flinders put ashore in search of fresh water
Aboard the ship was his devoted black and white cat -Trim
fortunately  - water was found!!

Some-where in Sydney there's a small bronze statue of Trim
 with the following inscription

TO THE MEMORY OF
TRIM
The best and most illustrious of his race
The most affectionate of friends,
faithful of servants,
and best of creatures
He made the tour of the globe, and a voyage to Australia,
which he circumnavigated, and was ever the
delight and pleasure of his fellow voyagers
Written by Matthew Flinders in memory of his cat

I thought all you cat lovers out there might like this snippet of trivia!!

Joan Elizabeth - Thanks for that info -I'll click over and check out Julie's site.

Craig - yes it is a lovely site and almost the same as it was in 1802 - there are a few shacks which have been built further up the bay but this area remains unspoilt!

I agree. A very beautiful place. Sounds like Mathew Flinders had quite a soft spot for his cat.

A well travelled puss. We did a tour of the wineries on the Eyre peninsular. It was a great trip and a beautiful place.

If you're ever in Sydney I'll show you exactly where possibly my favourite Sydney sculpture is. http://annamog.blogspot.com/2008/09/trim.html

Ann - Thanks for that I would love to see it!

Amazing to think these beautiful scenes are almost the same now as when Matthew Flinders arrived. I love that he was so fond of Trim, that he had this tribute made, can totally understand his sentiments, pets really find a way deep into our hearts.

That is a lovely story which I didn't know. Matthew Flinders called into Yamba to find fresh water as well. I wonder if Trim was with him them. My deceased neighbor in Yamba was an historian with a deep knowledge of Flinders, I will ask his wife, who would've edited his book, when I am there in October.

Mark - that would be interesting to find out if Trim was aboard at Yamba!

I am not so much a cat lover Dianne, but enjoyed the story and seeing beautiful scenery.
